San Antonio receives failing grade in new study

San Antonio doesn’t get anywhere near an A+ in terms of education levels, nor do most major cities in the Lone Star State, according to a new study. San Antonio-New Braunfels did not fare so well in any of the categories, ranking number 105 out of the 200 most populous American cities.

Dallas ISD has 91 failing schools — 20 more than last year — on the state’s latest Public Education Grant list. Schools added this year:

30 more Bexar schools failing new test

SAN ANTONIO — The number of failing schools in Texas whose performance is so bad that students there are eligible to transfer to better campuses came close to double the number last year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

And in Bexar County, that number almost quadrupled.

Most Houston-area school districts fail U.S. standards

In the Houston Independent School District, the largest in the state, the number of failing campuses more than doubled since last year to 169. Only 36 percent of the district’s schools met the federal standards.

Report: S.A. schools losing ground

SAN ANTONIO — Despite years of work and innovation, a more competitive environment and a sustained focus on education by San Antonio’s civic leaders, a higher percentage of schools here ranked lowest among Texas’ major metropolitan areas in the annual report of the nonprofit Children at Risk.

The Houston-based think tank and advocacy group will release the report Monday. It gives 43 percent of schools in the greater San Antonio area a letter grade of “D” or “F.”
